Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah has launched a project to drive environmental cleanliness and restore Kumasi to its pride as the Garden City of West Africa in partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Ltd.
The project, dubbed ‘Sustainable Cleaning, Greening and Beautification project of Ashanti’ will involve, Tree planting and growing, Provision of Concrete Refuse Bins at Vantage Points, Distribution of Refuse Bins to Households, Collection of sand gathered on sides of roads, Wire meshing of road medians and other relevant areas, Evacuation of Heaps of Refuse Dumps, Painting of curbs, ceremonial roundabouts and Extensive education on bye-laws by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
The Ashanti Regional Minister explained that when he took office in 2017 as Regional Minister, “one of the major issues to be tackled in the region was sanitation”. On 11th December 2018, he launched the “Clean and Green Campaign” aimed at achieving sustainable results that will put the region back to its glory of being clean, green and beautiful.
To exhibit a commitment to the “Clean and Green Campaign” campaign, the Regional Co-ordinating Council provided an amount of one hundred thousand cedis (GH¢100,000.00) as seed money for the take-off of the campaign. “The idea was to ginger the involvement of stakeholders particularly, the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to take over and ensure a smooth implementation of the campaign”. “Unfortunately, the lack of interest shown by the MMDAs and the little involvement of the Private Sector let the project down”, he added.
Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah noted however that the Council has identified the gaps of the previous “Clean and Green Campaign” as such this would serve as a guide for the new project.
The Ashanti Regional Security Council will lead the project while Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) will also liaise with their Security Councils to ensure smooth implementation of the exercise throughout the region.
He noted that MMDCEs will be assessed on their performance in this project. This will be a major indicator of the performance of Chief Executives.
The Regional Minister added that the council will sensitise the public on the need to keep the city clean and stop the indiscriminate disposal of waste. He further remarked that sanitation bye-laws will also be intensified to check indiscriminate waste disposal and sanctions offenders.
The Managing Director of Zoomlion Ghana limited, Mrs Gloria Anti indicated that the company has provided sanitation equipment and other requisite machines already, and stressed that, they are fully prepared to execute the project decently to enhance hygienic living for residents.
