The Chief and Opinion leaders of Akyem Akroso have come to a consensus to ban okada and its related activities in the area Nana Kwabena Ofori II, Akyem Akrosohene, has confirmed.
The decision to ban all okada activities which also involved the consent of the Assemblymember, unit committee members and other community elders were taken during Akwasidae with the ban taking effect on Monday 9th August.
According to Nana Ofori II, they have realised that the okada activities in the area are contributing to more deaths and injuries to residents rather than promoting transport business.
Explaining to Kwaku Aboagye Apenteng on Freedom Radio’s ‘’Yen Man’’ show, he said the okada riders are knocking people with their bikes and absconding without attending to them, irrespective of the intensive deliberations they have with them but they will not listen to their advice.
He said, one worrying aspect is that most of the riders are school dropouts and underage between the ages of 12 to 15 years, while most of the motorbikes are unregistered and the riders don’t have a license.
He said as leaders they couldn’t watch unconcerned their future leaders going astray in the name of Okada business, therefore they have decided to take the necessary action to help streamline okada activities in the area.
Nana Ofori II, said sometime in the past they had involved the police in making some arrests, however, they realised that the culprits got released so, this time they decided to enforce their authority as traditional leaders to ban the okada activities.
He debunks the notion that there is no indication without the services of okada there will be transportation challenges in the area as has been claimed by some riders.
