Fisheries Minister plans to protect fishery resources from being ‘overexploited’

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson has said her sector is pursuing long-term measures to protect fisheries resources, ensure recovery of the overexploited fish stocks and accelerate growth in the aquaculture subsector.

The Ministry is keen to sustain the fisheries and aquaculture sector for the current and future generations, ensure the production of quality fish for consumption and protect the environment by intensifying the fight to end illegal fishing activities in both marine and inland fishing communities.

According to her, implementing annual closed seasons for all fleets with the view of reducing the excessive pressure on marine fisheries and replenishing the depleting fish stocks is very necessary.

She noted that reviewing the existing fisheries legislation to incorporate emerging issues in fisheries management and governance plays a role in pursuing long-term measures to protect fisheries resources.

Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson stated that MOFAD will implement Fisheries Co-Management Policy to enhance collaboration between Government and resource users in the management of the fishery resources and also improving fisheries infrastructure for the modernization of the sector to enhance productivity.
