GNAT upset over 4-7% base pay increase for 2021, 2022 – Philipa Larsen

The National President for Ghana National Association of Teachers, a teacher union in Ghana, Mrs Philipa Larsen has expressed dissatisfaction with the announced base pay increment for public sector workers for 2021 and 2022.

Speaking at the 6th Quadrennial and 53rd Regional delegate conference for Bono Ahafo GNAT held at the Bono regional capital Sunyani, Mrs Philipa Larsen urged president Akufo-Addo to form a committee to decide on the salaries for all public sector workers to ensure fairness in their salary structure.

She stated that all public sector workers in the country must be entitled to the same amount in terms of salaries because the economic situation affects everyone therefore it is unfair for some pubic sector workers to be given a base pay increase for as low as 4 and 7% whiles others are given percentage of 40 or more.

She stressed that GNAT as a teacher union is not ready to accept the 4% salary increment hence government must ensure fairness in the base salaries of all public sector workers.

Mrs Philipa Larsen added that GNAT gives credence and support to their youths and women since they are the successors of the current leadership hence there are laid down policies for the youth whiles the women are given the needed attention to building their capacities.

She, therefore, cautioned the teacher union executives to desist from preventing the youths in their course of undertaking projects.

She finally explained the great impact of the GNAT welfare stating that members are made to pay Ghc2.00 monthly for cancer treatments.

Also, an amount of Ghc3000 to Ghc30,000 are paid to members to support them for the treatment of holes in heart, kidney or liver problems, therefore, support from all levels of GNAT is needed to ensure the smooth running of the association.
