President Akufo-Addo swears in Kissi Agyebeng as Special Prosecutor

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will today (5 August 2021) swear into office the special prosecutor nominee, Kissi Agyebeng.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will today (5 August 2021) swear into office the special prosecutor nominee, Kissi Agyebeng.

Agyebeng was approved unanimously, barely an hour after his vetting, by the appointments committee of Parliament on Friday 30 July 2021.

He has promised to clamp down on corruption.

“I am not naive to assume that I am coming to stop corruption,” Agyebeng said at his vetting. “There’s no way I can stop corruption. God, Himself will not lay claim to that, but I am going to make corruption very costly to engage in.”

He added: “First, I am going to institute what I call ‘Pressure for Progress’ and in this quest, there will be a systemic review of all public sector institutions and the development of integrity plans.”

Agyebeng will become only the second person to occupy the office, Martin Amidu having resigned from the position in 2020.

Agyebeng was called to the Ghana Bar in October 2003 and holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Ghana, as well as Master of Laws (LLM) degrees from the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University in Canada and Cornell Law School in Ithaca, New York, US.

He teaches criminal law at the University of Ghana and has been engaged in private legal practice.
