Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu has written to the Sheikh Al Maktoum to refund the over GHc16m paid him in the botched supply of Sputnik V vaccines to the country.

In the letter addressed to the Dubai Sheikh, the Health Minister tasked him to refund the remaining amount for the 280,000 doses of Sputnik V vaccines that have not been supplied.

The statement also stated that the remaining balance of the money which accounts for the non-inclusion of 20,000 doses which were only produced earlier, should be paid through the same account the transaction was made.

The agreement for the supply of Sputnik V vaccines with Sheikh Al Maktoum who acted as a middleman has generated controversy in Ghana. After presenting Ghana with 20,000 doses of the vaccine instead of the initially agreed doses of 300,000 for the first batch, the deal was subsequently terminated.

Sheik Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum of United Arab Emirates supplied doses of vaccines at a cost of $19 per dose to the Ghanaian government which he wasn’t able to provide all the doses as promised.

So far Ghana has vaccinated 1,230,000 people out of which 376,000 got the full Covid-19 dosage representing 1.2% of the total population who have received full vaccine.
